Why is Betty Boop cartoon considered racist?
that tube.com copy and paste this into the search bar to see the cartoon: Banned Cartoon-Betty Boop me know that pictures of black babies are racist, but I'm really confused about the watermelon. Why is watermelon anything considered racist? I'm not very familiar with racist stereotypes. You can see the clip of the 3 @ 3:10 ps black babies are babies in a kind of cotton field or is it just me?
I'm procrastinating at work, so I can not get to YouTube to watch the clip …. But my guess is that what we are seeing what they used to call black babies, it is bold. These images often had to eat watermelon and sitting in a bush or a cotton field. They have bulging eyes, hair disheveled, red-colored lips and big ol big mouth and tattered clothes. It was / is a derogatory name and image for children and black is used to describe a demeaning stereotype of black people and usually more than one baby, so it also reinforces the stereotype that black women were those overly sexed, promiscuous animals without restraint. It is difficult to determine what watermelon. Slaves for food was a precious commodity, so the theft of a watermelon patch or a cooperative chicken ….. could become an easy way for whites to classify blacks as thieves or commit the image of this smiling, happy, naive "negrito" happily eating on a watermelon. The myth of the "happy", watermelon, eating chicken slave. Hope this helps a little.
