Block Printing in India: three main techniques
printing blocks, as the name suggests, is the use of wooden blocks in the process dyeing and printing. In India, block print has been in practice since the 12th century. Even before in the 6 th century BC, there are references to India maintained cotton trade relations with Babylon. So the idea that India is very ancient heritage of cotton clothing. Block printing is well known for the use of colors rich and vibrant. Traditionally, natural vegetable colors were used in this process, but today-synthetic colors are also used.
There are three main techniques of block printing:
a) Direct Printing: This printing block technique, first, the fabric cotton or silk is washed to be free of starch. Then bleached in a low voice, if the natural gray color of the fabric is not necessary. Wooden blocks, also known as "Bunta" are subjected to minute designs carved on the bottom. These wooden blocks used to print the material with the help of ready-mixed colors. Printing is done for the first time in the outer edges of the fabric and then follow the printing of the hinterland. First, the larger details are covered then the smallest details are set according to the design.
b) Resistance Printing: This is the technique that, in fact, resists the ink to be applied in some particular areas of the fabric. The prints are designed so that in some places there is no need to dye. To facilitate this, a mixture of clay and resin is applied in areas where you do not want dyed. Dye, if it comes to protected areas through cracks produce a wavy pattern. However, taken as beautification. Then wash the dyed fabric. In addition, the remaining areas are usually block printed fabric.
c) Printing High: This block printing technique. First, is dyed with the desired color. Then a chemical is applied to certain regions of the fabric disappear or eliminate the effect of color. Moreover, these regions vanished again, but dyed a different color, so that a color effect is produced.
Block printing is done in various parts of India. The main centers of block printing in Rajasthan and Gujarat are Ahmedabad, Sanganer, Bagru, Farrukhabad and Pethapur. Ajrakh Lepakshi prints and prints are some of the most popular block prints.
