Charm Squares
Is it just me or has New York lost its gritty charm that it had from the 1960’s to the early 90’s?
There is a starbucks on every corner now, once hip and artsy neighborhoods such as Chelsea, The West Village, hell even the east village are now occupied by yuppies. (Hell! The former CBGBs is now a designer clothing store!), Times Square is full of posters for Disney movies and Foot Lockers, Applebees, GAPs… that it I might as well be in a suburban shopping mall in freakin Ohio! Damn those republican mayors! They ruin everything! What happen to the NYC that gave us “Taxi Driver”, Nan Godin, Madonna, Grand Master Flash, Keith Haring, Blondie, and Stonewall?

The point I was making is that people in the past moved to New York to get away from suburbia. People obsessed with safety and cleanliness should live in the suburbs.
Oh, yes, definitely.
The thing that I find so sad nowadays is that the ferocious expense of living in New York City has made it virtually impossible for the starving artists and poets and musicians and dancers, etc., etc., etc., who used to flock here by the hundreds to seek their fortune in New York City, can’t afford to come here any more, and as a result, the city has lost almost ALL of the quirky charm that once made it the place people wanted to live.
I mean, once upon a time, you could move to New York City with a couple hundred bucks in your pocket and find a cheap apartment in a borderline neighborhood and seek your fame and fortune as an artist or a singer or a poet or whatever.
Nowadays, if you’re not as wealthy as Donald Trump or our multi-billionaire mayor, you’re really just not welcome here any more, as evidenced by this direct quote from a local politician that I think sums it all up very nicely:

It’s a shame, really. New York City is now virtually off limits to the very people who made it the vibrant exciting city it once was in the first place.
