how to make cotton flannel receiving blanket?
I have been looking into swaddling blankets for my newborn and found many people like one that is simply a 42″ square piece of cotton flannel. Only problem is it sells for 32 dollars so I am going to make my own with fabric from the craft store. I am wondering if I need to do anything to the fabric besides cutting it and washing it? Does it fray and need to be trimmed around the edge?
Flannel frays and it shrinks. Simplest treatment would probably be to remove the selvages (they pucker) and pink the edges, perhaps running a machine straight stitch about 1/4″ in from the “valleys” of the pinking. Other choices would be to narrow hem or use a machine to overcast the edges. Or you can make double thickness blankets by sewing two pieces, rightsides together (prewash first, especially if you’re using two different flannels), then stitch around the edges and turn through and opening, hand or machine stitching the opening closed.
