Moda Quilt
is there a mathematical equation to help decide what square to put where in a quilt?
i am new to quilting and purchased the moda s’mores 5 inch blocks. there are 37 different patterns, but there are so many of each color or a certain amount of rickrack pattern and a certain amount of snowmen. it just seems like there aught to be a way to put it together without putting two like colors together or two like patterns. this is driving me nuts and i would appreciate any advice you can offer. thank you.
Even if it were possible to distribute every color and pattern perfectly, you really shouldn’t want to. When you’re using that many different fabrics, you need that element of randomness to make it comfortable. It’s like those old family photos, the ones where people are standing stiffly side by side, spaced equally, dressed properly, unsmiling. There’s no warmth in a photo like that, and a perfectly distributed quilt will have that same precise coldness. Take that same photo and throw in some smiles, someone’s arm around the person next to them, a child leaning on Dad’s leg, and the it generates the warmth that was lacking. Same thing goes for a quilt. If there’s a little disorganization it gives the quilt the charm that was lacking. Separate all of your squares, mix them up thoroughly, then choose squares without looking (the paper bag trick works well as long as you mix them up carefully first). Lay them out, 12345, to form your quilt (I assume you’re doing 7×5). Take a photo with a digital camera, if possible, and look at the image in the camera viewer. This will help you spot any truly bad combinations. If you have a block of dark colors on one side, for example, you may need to move them a little to balance the quilt. Don’t go overboard, though. Once you’re reasonably satisfied, sew them together and don’t look back.
I’ve found that quilting has helped me get over my need to have everything arranged perfectly. Consider it therapy!
