Motion Quilting
I am trying to hand quilt for the first time & need help!!!?
I have gotten the knot in & hidden, but after that I can’t seem to getting the knack of the rocking motion or able to bring the need back through all the layers in such a small space. Am I doing somehting wrong or any helpful hints?!?!?
The link given is a good one. There’s also a series of hand-quilting videos available at ‘about.com’, which has tons of other good quilting help, too. If you have a quilt shop near you, you’d probably be able to find someone on staff there to give you hands-on help (a regular fabric store may or may not have someone who knows what they’re doing), and most quilt shops offer all kinds of classes.
The tips which I found most useful were to make sure the quilt isn’t real tight in the frame/hoop, and to do your first project with larger ‘betweens’ needles (size 8 or 9) – you can get them almost anywhere sewing notions and needles are sold (I get mine at Walmart). Also, I’ve known some wonderful hand quilters who say they need to start out on a practice piece for a few minutes to get their rhythm going.
